In the midst of the digital age, advances in personalized medicine and biomedical research are redefining the future of healthcare. However, one of the major challenges facing the sector is the proper management, coding, and interoperability of clinical and genetic data. The evolution in the implementation of clinical standards and new regulations is attempting to streamline their full use, both in hospital settings and in research, with the aim of achieving more accurate diagnoses and individualized treatments.
In this scenario, initiatives such as the European Health Data Space (EHDS) and the AI Act are paving the way toward a more connected, secure, and efficient healthcare ecosystem. Within this strategic framework, TerminAI was born, an innovative project that uses artificial intelligence to transform the way healthcare data is coded, managed, and used. Its goal: to make clinical and genetic information more accessible, useful, and interoperable for healthcare professionals.
Artificial intelligence at the service of more accurate healthcare
TerminAI offers a technological solution based on artificial intelligence capable of analyzing large volumes of clinical data using natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning techniques. Through these systems, data is contextualized and automatically mapped to standardized terminologies such as SNOMED CT, thus facilitating its use in clinical systems and data analysis platforms.
This approach not only improves diagnostic accuracy, but also allows for more personalized treatments by reducing ambiguities in the coding of clinical information. The technology developed by TerminAI is particularly relevant in an environment where the volume of healthcare data is growing exponentially and its correct interpretation is becoming essential for medical decision-making.
Processing of genetic data and digitization of informed consent
One of the main contributions of the project is the integration of genetic data processing using advanced bioinformatics tools and incremental learning techniques. This enables an automated and comprehensive approach to genomic analysis, which is key to the diagnosis and prevention of hereditary or complex diseases. It also improves the ability of healthcare professionals to manage large volumes of genetic data quickly and efficiently.
At the same time, TerminAI is promoting the digitization of informed consent forms, replacing handwritten formats with accessible, traceable, and secure digital solutions. This improvement not only reduces interpretation errors but also strengthens patient rights by facilitating access to their authorization history at any time.
A strategic collaboration focused on innovation
The development of TerminAI is the result of a multidisciplinary consortium formed by Devol, NorayBio, BIOLAN, EProcessMed, Vicomtech, AseBio, and Basque Health Cluster. Each member of the consortium contributes complementary knowledge and skills in key areas such as artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, genetic diagnosis, clinical management, and data integration.
Special mention should be made of the role played by Basque Health Cluster and AseBio, which are participating in the project as Innovative Business Groups (AEI) recognized by the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Tourism through the State Research Agency (AEI). Their involvement reinforces the strategic focus of the project, contributing to the revitalization of innovation ecosystems in health and promoting collaboration between technology companies, research centers, and entities in the healthcare system.
Basque Health Cluster, as a driving force in the biotechnology sector in the Basque Country, acts as a catalyst for the integration of advanced solutions into clinical practice, while AseBio (Spanish Association of Biotechnology Companies) promotes connections between biotechnology companies and innovation policies at the national and European levels.
TerminAI: laying the foundations for an interoperable healthcare future
One of the long-term objectives of the project is to ensure that the solutions developed are fully compatible with European health data infrastructures. This involves ensuring interoperability with EHDS data spaces, while complying with data protection, security, and quality regulations.
TerminAI therefore not only improves the efficiency of current clinical processes, but also lays the foundations for a more connected, proactive, and patient-centered healthcare system. Thanks to public-private cooperation and the application of disruptive technologies such as AI, this project contributes to building a more accessible and secure healthcare environment that is capable of responding to the challenges of the present and the future.
